A Breakdown of the Cards

The tarot deck is composed of 78 cards. The Minor Arcana comprises 56 Tarot cards, in four suits (Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles) of 14 cards each; ten numbered cards and four court cards. The court cards are the Page, Knight, Queen, and King.

Major Arcana Cards

The Major Arcana is a suit of 22 trump cards, also called the Triumphs, that is almost universally played today. These cards include The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, and The Empress. Major Arcana cards typically represent major life events or changes.

Minor Arcana Cards

The Minor Arcana cards are the 56 cards that make up the suits of Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles. These cards represent the smaller aspects of our lives, such as our emotions, thoughts, and material possessions.

In a tarot reading, the Minor Arcana can provide insights into the day-to-day experiences and challenges we face. The suit of Cups, for example, often symbolizes our emotions. So if you're feeling stressed or overwhelmed, the Minor Arcana can offer guidance on how to deal with these feelings.

Card Placement Meaning

Each card has a purpose in terms of its suit, but it also has another meaning when it is upright or reversed in relation to the other cards surrounding it. For example, the Ace of Cups can represent new beginnings or happiness in love, but if it's surrounded by negative cards, it could instead indicate a false start or an unhappy relationship.

Picking the Right Tarot Cards For You

Tarot decks are distinguished by the imagery on the cards as well as their size. You can use many different tarot decks, so it's important to find one that speaks to you. Some decks are traditional, while others are more modern. There are also different sizes of cards, so you can find a deck that is comfortable for you to use.

When you're first starting, it's important to find a tarot deck that has simple imagery. This will help you to quickly understand the meanings of the cards. Once you've mastered the basics, you can move on to a more complex deck. There are also several different ways to read tarot cards, so experiment until you find a method that works best for you.
